From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein Document Release is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric

Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.

Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release

But, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.

Yet a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Response

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued

However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of files that included no previously unseen information.
