RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
